About the event

One of the world’s most urgent humanitarian emergencies, the crisis in Afghanistan has entered a critical phase—caught between economic collapse and geopolitical isolation, societal resilience and widespread suffering. Since the withdrawal of international forces and the ensuing political transition, Afghans have faced rising poverty, severe restrictions on rights, and a profound breakdown in essential services. The situation has transformed not only the country’s internal dynamics but also the policies of regional powers and the international community, raising pressing questions about humanitarian responsibility, engagement under complex political conditions, and the future of stability in Central and South Asia.

This event brings together experienced professionals and scholars to examine the drivers, consequences, and global reverberations of Afghanistan’s humanitarian catastrophe. From the state of human rights and access to aid, to the role of international organizations, neighboring states, and global powers, the discussion will explore how local realities and international politics intersect to shape the prospects for relief and long-term recovery.

With Prof. Viktoriia Lapa (Bocconi University) setting the context and moderating, Michele Usuelli (Emergency) and Fatima Haidari will offer distinct perspectives to unpack the humanitarian, political, and security dimensions defining Afghanistan at this pivotal moment.
